Flying Back to Italy in 2021, Our Experience

Patience and a little extra organization.

Planning and booking flights to Italy this year has not been for the faint of heart. We have had countless flights cancelled and have been unsure as to when or how the regulations would change.

10 days prior to departure it seemed less likely that our flights would be cancelled we felt relieved. We also got right to making sure we would have all the necessary documentation.

In all we took two flights. Our first flight was from Boston to Dublin. About a week before the flight we got an email explaining all the documentation we would need to fill out.

A passenger locator form: asking for personal information, final destination, place of lodging and agreement to follow the local rules. We also were required to have a molecular Covid test done within 72 hours before taking off.

Upon arriving at the airport we checked in per usual and were asked to present our negative test.

When we arrived in Dublin we went through customs and were asked for our negative test as well as our passenger locator form. They also asked for a specific form for those staying in Ireland but since our final destination would be Italy they didn’t need it.

Our second flight was from Dublin to Rome and had been booked separately. We started from the beginning, checking in, presenting a negative test and passenger locator form.

Once arriving in Rome they had a customs line for people from outside the Schengen zone, they asked for the passenger locator form and reason for travel (there are no restricted reasons), they did not ask to see our negative test but did ask if we had taken a test.

That was that, we exited the airport got on the train and got home.

The most important thing to be is organized and prepared, a lot of people seem to be having different experiences and wait times are expected to be a little longer but it’s almost August and that’s pretty normal.

As always if you have any concerns whatsoever, reach out, we’re always here and happy to be a resource for you!
