Pompeii or Pompei? (<1 MIN Read)

You’ve probably seen Pompeii and Pompei and have been confused on which one to use. Well here’s the answer:

Pompeii refers to the ancient city that got buried under Vesuvius’ ashes in 79 A.D. It was a city with allegiance to Rome, although the foundation of Pompeii was laid by the Greeks hundreds of years before.

Instead Pompei refers to the modern day city which is a commune of Naples. Pompei is situated just to the east of the ancient city and is full of culture and history as well. Pompei has particularly good wineries and vineyards, benefitting from the volcanic ash that is present in the soil.

It’s interesting that wine from Pompeii just as wine from Pompei remains to be one of the most important industries and exported products from the area.
